New Yorkers can’t stop taking the MTA for a ride.
Bus fare evasion is rising and subway fare evasion isn’t falling, data released Monday shows — potentially costing the agency hundreds of million in revenue it desperately needs to close its ballooning deficit.
Some 25.3% of bus riders did not pay the fare between April and June of this year, say Metropolitan Transportation Authority analysts. That’s up from 22.6% during the first three months of the year.
Roughly 3.9% of subway riders skipped the turnstiles from April to June, the same number recorded during the first quarter of the year.
